Evolution towards digital transformation

Digitalization brings additional degree of freedom for grid operation and entails the need of developing a smart grid to master upcoming challenges in the Low Voltage Grid. Analysts expect the DER capacity to more than double in the next ten years, with a double digit compound annual growth rate (CAGR). In our experience, grid operators can already benefit from additional data even in the early stages of a smart meter roll-out. Our solution allows the estimation of a realistic load flow and the utilization of the entire Low Voltage Grid, even with limited available smart meter data.

Low Voltage Grid Platform

The Siemens Advanta Low Voltage Grid Platform is an open and modular IoT solution based on proven technologies that support standards, scalability and highest interoperability.

Digital Twin of the Low Voltage Grid

The core of our platform consists of a digital model of the Low Voltage Grid which allows the simulation of all network states caused by the volatility of DER and EV charging stations.
Deployment of additional IoT devices in the network, providing data to the platform, will lead to a higher accuracy of the digital twin.

Example project: Smart Meter load-profile aggregation

We supported the utility of a major European city with the determination of load-profiles, which is the first step to enabling the realization of the use cases
  • 'Automated connection assessment' & 'Network planning invest / reinvest' for the network planning process, as well as
  • 'Monitoring of line utilization' & 'Congestion management' for the operational management process
The availability of these load-profiles enables a number of other future applications. Examples are the determination of trends in the consumption of the individual stations and strings, as well as changes in their consumption patterns (e.g.: growth in electric mobility), but also the state estimation of the utilization of individual cable sections and the provision of operating reserves for flexibility operators.
